  • Acupressure mat: how long should a session last?

    L'équipe Apaizia

    For your first sessions on an acupressure mat, a few minutes is enough. Then you can gradually extend them to 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your sensitivity. There is no ideal length for everyone: the right length is the one that stays pleasant for you. Here are our guidelines to find it.

    The golden rule: start short

    The first few minutes on the mat are often the most intense, especially if you are new to acupressure. A short, pleasant session is better than a long one you have to endure.

    For your very first tries:

    • stay 3 to 5 minutes;
    • keep on a thin top or place a light piece of fabric between your skin and the mat;
    • choose a soft surface, such as the bed or sofa.

    If you are just starting out, our guide How to use an acupressure mat explains how to settle in, step by step.

    Gradually lengthen your sessions

    Once you are used to the first sensations, add a few minutes to each session. Here is one possible progression, to adapt as you like:

    PeriodSession lengthWhat to wear
    First few days3 to 5 minutesThin top
    Next5 to 10 minutesThin top or light fabric
    Once you feel comfortable10 to 20 minutesAs you prefer

    There is no rush: you can keep your sessions short or make them longer. Both are fine.

    How long, depending on the time of day?

    The length also depends on how much time you have:

    • a break during the day: 5 to 10 minutes, sitting or lying down, to step away from the screen;
    • when you get home from work: 10 to 15 minutes, to mark the end of the day;
    • in the evening: 15 to 20 minutes, in a quiet room with soft lighting;
    • at the weekend: a longer session, with soft music or a calm podcast.

    A short, regular moment matters more than a long session every now and then.

    How do you know when to stop?

    Simply listen to how you feel. The session should remain a relaxing moment:

    • if the feeling becomes too strong, add a layer of fabric or move to a softer surface;
    • if you are no longer comfortable, simply end the session;
    • to get up, gently roll onto your side before sitting up.

    There is no goal to reach. A successful five-minute session is better than a forced twenty-minute one.

    Keep track of time without checking the clock

    Looking at your watch does not help you slow down. A few tips to forget the timer:

    • a gentle timer on your phone, on silent mode;
    • a playlist of the length you want: when the music stops, the session ends;
    • your breathing: count about ten slow breaths at first, then a few more each session.

    How many sessions a week?

    You can use your mat every day, or only when you feel like it. The easiest way is to make it a small regular ritual, linked to a specific moment of the day. What matters is that it stays a pleasure, not a chore.

    As a precaution, do not use the mat on irritated or damaged skin. If you are pregnant or have a health condition, ask a healthcare professional for advice first.

    In short

    • 3 to 5 minutes for your first sessions.
    • Then 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your sensitivity.
    • A short, regular session is better than a long, forced one.
    • If it feels too intense: an extra layer of fabric, a softer surface, or stop.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I stay on the mat for more than 20 minutes?

    Once you are used to it, nothing stops you from making your sessions a little longer, as long as they stay pleasant. Listen to how you feel and adjust the length to your comfort.

    Can I use the mat several times a day?

    Yes, for example a short break during the day and a longer session in the evening. Keep your sessions pleasant.

    Should I stay still throughout the session?

    Yes, it is more comfortable: once you are settled, avoid moving or sliding on the mat.
